Mercari Return Policy: How to Handle Returns as Seller?

Mercari Return Policy

A return request can feel like bad news when you sell on Mercari. But the Mercari return policy is short, clear, and built to protect sellers as well as buyers.

In this guide, you will learn when buyers on Mercari can return an item and when they can’t. You will also learn how to handle a Mercari return request step by step.

We will cover who pays for return shipping, what to do if an item comes back damaged, and how to prevent Mercari returns. Let’s start with the basics.

What Is the Mercari Return Policy?

Mercari does not offer “returns for any reason.” A buyer can only return an item if it has a real problem, such as damage or a wrong description.

Mercari tried a “return for any reason” policy in spring 2024. Sellers pushed back hard, and Mercari brought back the old rules on May 22, 2024.

The 72-Hour Window

After the carrier marks an order as delivered, the Mercari buyer has 72 hours (3 days) to check the item. During that time, the buyer can either rate the order or ask for a return.

If the buyer does nothing, Mercari rates the order for them after 72 hours. This step is called auto-rating, and it releases your payment.

Why the Rating Matters

Once the buyer or Mercari rates the order, the sale is final. After that point, Mercari will not approve a return or refund.

This rule is your biggest protection as a seller. It means most sales close fast, and you get paid on time.

Who Decides on a Return?

The buyer does not decide, and neither do you. Mercari reviews every request and decides if the item qualifies.

If Mercari approves a return, you must accept it.

When Can Buyers Return an Item on Mercari?

According to Mercari return policy, Mercari approves returns in only three cases.

Not as Described: The item is significantly different from your photos, title, description, or listed condition.

Damaged in Shipping: The item broke or got damaged on its way to the buyer.

Fake or Inauthentic: The item is a counterfeit, or the buyer has real doubts about its authenticity.

The wrong item also counts. If you ship a blue shirt instead of a red one, the buyer can return it.

Reasons Mercari Usually Rejects Return Request from Buyers

Mercari usually says no to these “buyer’s remorse” reasons:

1. The item doesn’t fit

2. The buyer changed their mind or doesn’t like the style

3. Small scratches, dents, or box wear that don’t affect how the item works

4. Slow shipping caused by the carrier or weather

5. Smells, pet hair, or dander, unless very different from the listing

Items That are Usually Non-Returnable on Mercari

Some items can’t come back for hygiene reasons. These include swimwear, lingerie, underwear, earrings, body jewelry, and opened beauty products.

Also, a buyer can’t return a factory-sealed item after opening it. The only exceptions are items that are defective, damaged, or fake.

The buyer must send the item back unworn, unwashed, and unchanged. All original tags must still be attached.

Mercari can deny a refund if the buyer packs the return poorly, changes the item, or acts in a dishonest way.

How to Handle a Mercari Return Request as a Seller?

When a buyer asks for a return, Mercari pauses the order. Your payment stays on hold until Mercari finishes its review.

Follow these steps to handle Mercari returns calmly and protect your account.

1. Stay calm and read the request. Open the Order Status page and read the buyer’s reason. Look closely at any photos they shared.

2. Compare it with your listing. Check your photos, title, and description against the buyer’s claim. Ask yourself if you clearly showed or mentioned the issue.

3. Reply to the buyer politely. Use Mercari messages only, and keep your tone friendly. Many problems end here with a simple answer or a quick fix.

4. Give Mercari your side. If you think the claim is wrong, share proof with Mercari support. Point to listing photos, packing photos, or serial numbers.

5. Wait for Mercari’s decision. Mercari may ask both of you for more photos or details. Respond fast, because Mercari often gives people only 24 hours.

6. Accept an approved return. If Mercari approves the return, you must accept it. Make sure your return address on your account is correct.

7. Track the return package. The buyer must drop off the package within 72 hours of approval. If the carrier doesn’t scan it within 168 hours (7 days), Mercari may cancel the return and pay you.

8. Inspect the item the moment it arrives. Open the box right away, and record a video while you unpack it. Check the item against your listing and your own photos.

9. Report problems within 24 hours. If the item comes back damaged or different, contact Mercari within 24 hours of delivery. Do it through the Order Status page or Help Center.

10. Let Mercari finish the refund. If all looks fine, Mercari refunds the buyer within 14 days of the return’s delivery. You keep the item and can list it again.

What If the Return is Small?

For very low-priced orders, Mercari may give the buyer account credit instead of a refund. In some of these cases, the buyer doesn’t even have to ship the item back.

Who Pays for Return Shipping on Mercari?

For most orders, Mercari pays. When Mercari approves a return, it emails the buyer a free prepaid return label.

This free label covers items up to 50 pounds. Mercari measures weight as the actual weight or the dimensional weight, whichever is higher.
