What Does VGUC Mean on eBay and Other Marketplaces?

What Does VGUC Mean

You found the perfect cashmere sweater online, but the listing says “VGUC,” and you have no idea what that means. You are not alone.

You will spot the abbreviation VGUC everywhere, be it eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, or Facebook Marketplace. Both buyers and sellers rely on these shorthand codes to save time and set clear expectations.

Still, terms like VGUC feel confusing when every seller applies them a little differently. That is why understanding what they mean matters before you click “Buy Now.”

In this guide, we will explain what does VGUC mean. Moreover, we’ll discuss how it compares to other condition abbreviations, and what to include in a VGUC listing.

What Does VGUC Mean?

VGUC means Very Good Used Condition.

You’ll see this a lot of items described as VGUC on Poshmark, eBay, Depop, and other marketplaces.

It means the item is secondhand but was barely used. Maybe it was worn a few times. There may be minor signs of wear, but nothing is broken or damaged.

So, what counts as a minor sign of wear in a clothing item?

1. Light pilling — small fuzz balls under the arms or inner thighs.

2. Slight fading — color is a little softer than new, but even all over.

3. Slightly loose cuffs or waistband — stretches out a bit but still snaps back.

4. Softened print — the design is whole and clear, just not as sharp.

5. Softer fabric — feels broken in instead of crisp.

An item is not VGUC if it has stains. Or pilling thick enough to catch on your fingers. Or a zipper that sticks or won’t close. Or missing buttons. Or seams that are stretched out or coming apart. Or any smell.

If an item has any of those signs, it belongs to GUC (Good Used Condition) or lower. Regular buyers will notice the difference right away.

Bumping a GUC item up to VGUC for a few extra dollars rarely works out. An honest listing brings buyers back. An inflated one brings a return request and a bad rating you can’t erase later.

Where VGUC Sits on the Condition Ladder

AbbreviationMeaningWhat It Actually Looks Like
NWTNew With TagsNever worn. Original tags still attached.
NWOTNew Without TagsNever worn, but tags removed.
EUCExcellent Used ConditionWorn once or twice. Almost impossible to tell it is used.
VGUCVery Good Used ConditionLightly worn. Tiny wear only if you look closely.
GUCGood Used ConditionVisible wear. Small flaws you would notice while wearing it.
UC / FairUsed or Play ConditionObvious flaws. Sold cheap or for repair.

What Does VGUC Mean on Each Marketplace?

eBay

eBay changed its condition framework for pre-loved clothing in February 2025.

Previously, eBay sellers listing pre-loved clothing could only select “Pre-owned” as the item condition.

Now there are three options: Pre-owned — Excellent, Pre-owned — Good, and Pre-owned — Fair.

VGUC maps to Pre-owned — Excellent. eBay defines that tier as like new, previously worn, but with little to no signs of wear.

One warning matters here.

All existing “Pre-owned” clothing listings on eBay were automatically converted to “Pre-owned — Good.”

If you listed before 2025 and never reviewed those listings, your VGUC items may be sitting in the wrong bucket right now.

Poshmark

Poshmark VGUC Listing

Poshmark is one marketplace where seller usually mention the condition tag in the title or description of their listing.

That means VGUC carries more weight on Poshmark than any other marketplace.

Poshmark buyers actively read Poshmark titles and descriptions because the platform gives them fewer filters to lean on.

Write it out fully at least once: “Very Good Used Condition (VGUC).” Not every shopper on Poshmark knows the abbreviation, and unfamiliar words make people scroll away.

Mercari

Mercari uses a five-step dropdown: New, Like New, Good, Fair, and Poor. VGUC maps to Good.

Do not be tempted upward. Mercari defines “Good” clothing as gently worn with minor flaws such as slight pilling, stretching, minor fading, or loose threads, and still fully wearable.

That is the textbook description of VGUC.

“Like New” on Mercari is closer to EUC or NWOT. Choosing it for a VGUC item will get you nothing but refund requests.

Depop

Depop is a marketplace where vintage and streetwear sell the most, and where wear is often part of the appeal.

Condition options on Depop run from brand new through used tiers, and VGUC fits the excellent-used end.

Depop buyers are usually younger and shop visually. They scroll fast, so your photos carry the grading more than your words do.

How to Price a VGUC Item?

VGUC items usually sell for 35% to 55% of the original retail price. Brand strength moves that number more than anything else.

Use this as a starting range, then adjust with real data.

Item TypeVGUC Price Range (% of Retail)
Fast fashion (H&M, Shein, Forever 21)15% – 25%
Mid-tier brands (Gap, Zara, Madewell)30% – 45%
Premium denim and outerwear40% – 55%
Athleisure (Lululemon, Nike, Alo)45% – 65%
Designer and luxury clothing50% – 70%

Price Against Sold Listings, Not Active Ones

This is the single biggest pricing mistake resellers make. Active listings show what people hope to get. Sold listings show what buyers actually paid.

On eBay, filter your search by “Sold Items.” On Poshmark and Mercari, look for listings marked sold.

Then narrow further. Compare the same brand, same size, same color, and same condition tier. A VGUC black hoodie and a VGUC neon hoodie don’t sell for the same price.

What to Include in a VGUC Listing?

Your listing has one job: remove doubt. Every unanswered question is a buyer who scrolls past.

The Photo Checklist

1. Take these seven shots. It takes five extra minutes and dramatically cuts returns.

2. Full front and full back, flat or on a hanger

3. The brand label and the size tag

4. The care and fabric tag

5. A close-up of the material texture

6. Every flaw, photographed honestly and up close

7. One styled or worn shot if possible

Photographing flaws feels counterproductive. It is not. Disclosed flaws build trust, while hidden flaws become refunds.

The Description Template

Copy this structure and fill in the blanks.

[Brand] [Item] — Size [X] — VGUC

Very Good Used Condition. Worn approximately [number] times.

Measurements (flat): chest [X]”, length [X]”, sleeve [X]”, waist [X]”

Material: [fabric content]

Flaws: [Specific note, or “none found after inspection”]

Comes from: smoke-free, pet-free home

Measurements matter more than size labels. Sizing varies wildly between brands and decades, and “size 8” tells a buyer almost nothing.

Adding measurements is the highest-return effort in resale. It removes the number one reason clothing gets returned.

List Your VGUC Items Across Marketplaces with Sidekick Tools

VGUC works differently across different marketplaces. One VGUC sweater that you need to upload to four marketplaces requires four different condition settings, four sets of photos uploaded, and four descriptions kept in sync.

Do that manually for 100 items and you will spend more time on data entry than sourcing. You will also make mistakes, and mismatched conditions across marketplaces are exactly what triggers disputes.

But don’t worry!

Sidekick Tools helps you create a VGUC listing once and crosslist it to 7 different marketplaces, so your VGUC grading stays consistent everywhere.

Sidekick Tools Crosslisting Feature

The bigger win is visibility. Listing the same item on multiple marketplaces multiplies your buyer pool without multiplying your work.

Sidekick Tools also automates the tasks that nobody enjoys doing, like sharing, relisting, and sending offers to likers.

One caution worth stating plainly. Automation copies whatever you feed it, so grade the item carefully once, then let the cross-listing tool replicate that accuracy at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is VGUC better or worse than EUC?

EUC ranks slightly higher. EUC means the item looks nearly untouched, while VGUC allows small, honest signs of light wear.

Can I write VGUC in my eBay title?

You can, but the structured condition field matters more. Buyers filter searches using that field, so select Pre-owned — Excellent and use VGUC as supporting text.

What if my item is VGUC but has one small stain?

Then it is not VGUC. A visible stain moves it to Good Used Condition, and mislabeling it invites a return that costs you more than the price difference.

Do buyers actually know what VGUC means?

Most buyers on marketplaces like eBay and Poshmark do know what VGUC means. Buyers who are new to these marketplaces often do not, so spell it out once in your description and let the abbreviation reinforce it.

Should I clean an item before listing it as VGUC?

Yes, you should always clean an item before listing it as VGUC. Buyers expect it ready to use, and dirt drops the value of the item.
